     NRA Benefactor member Herb Lanford, a former five-term NRA state association President, was the first recipient of the James M. Smith Award for distinguished service to the right to keep and bear arms, and was also named South Carolina's leading citizen in the defense of our firearms heritage. A hunter, competitive shooter and legislative/grassroots activist, Herb chaired the Southeast's first Friends of NRA event. Herb is a Life member of the South Carolina, Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, North Carolina and Texas NRA state associations; an NRA Certified Basic Firearms Instructor and a S.C. Certified Hunter Education Instructor. Herb is dedicated to an aggressive approach in support of the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans as evidenced by his activities in various professional, civic and progun sportsmen's organizations at the local, state and national levels.

Mr. Lanford was re-elected to the NRA Board of Directors in 2002 for a 3 year term.
